A lone woman walked through the park. A pale, gibbous moon hung in the sky.
“Dammit,” she muttered to herself, “I should have worn a longer dress.”
A large wad of cash fell out of her purse, she bent to pick it up.
“Guess I should have dropped all this money off at the bank.”
There was a rustling from the bushes.
“Who’s there?”
No reply.
“I’m warning you, I’m a young, beautiful woman, between the age of 20 and 25, all alone...” She stopped herself, shivering in the October wind “...maybe not the best thing to have said...”
She began to run, but of course, that’s difficult at the best of times in high heels. She tripped and fell, and when she looked up, there were 20 or so nice hoodlums to help her up.
She was gathering herself for a scream when several huge, scuttling monstrosities bore down on the group.
“Who? What are you?!”
“I’m Jose, this is Phil...”
“Hi there.”
“...and this is...”
“Not you, them!”
Jose looked up and noticed the giant insect creatures bearing down on him.
“Never met those guys before.”
The woman finally managed a scream.
The nice young men screamed even louder.
The critters seemed to be singing: “Cheeseburger in paradise! Heaven on Earth with an onion slice!”
The woman covered her face, but the critters passed her by and swarmed over to the gang of toughs.
“Hey...” Jose managed to say before being overwhelmed by the creatures.
Gobbling sounds ensued.
The woman peeked between her fingers. The creatures seemed to be giant spiders.
“I like mine with lettuce and tomatoes!”
One of them ambled over to her and poked her with a forelimb.
“Are you OK?”
“Erm...fine. You guys are not...”
More gobbling sounds ensued.
“...going to eat me, are you?”
“Who, us? Never!”
“We’re police!”
“Yeah, that’s right!” said the first one, winking four of its eight eyes. “Public Safety. That’s us.”
“Keeping the streets safe!” said another.
“From tastee” here one of the spiders kicked the speaker “...uh, dangerous criminals!”
“But they hadn’t done anything!” protested the young woman.
“Yeah, but they looked like they were about to!” responded the spider.
“Yeah, trust us on that one.”
“We know what we’re doing!”
“Whelp, another life saved...and I’m full.”
The gang of spiders scuttled off.
The woman looked at the remains of the spiders’ meal. An uneaten gang member peeked out from behind a tree.
“Are they gone yet?”
